The Himlayan Mountain Dog as a registered breed is founded on the landrace called by regional names. They are are genetically similar, and physically and behaviorally similar. These dogs have been influenced by their environment so they are specific to a geography for traditional work.

The aim in registering the HMD is not to make them all look exactly the same, but to promote their varying styles, encourage genetic diversity, and to gain patrons of these beautiful dog as a part of preserving their styles for generations to come.

The local names of these dogs are Bankhar, Do-Kyhi, Apso Do-Khyi, Bhote Kukur, Bjop Chi, Bakharwal, Gaddi,and Baan Gaddi.


The Himalayan Mountain Dog Registry is the primary and the most accurate registration service for Himalayan Mountain Dogs. We are your partner in preserving, promoting, and protecting the Himalayan Mountain Dog.


We are a not-for-profit organization.

Our service goals are:

• To create and maintan the most accurate and reliable pedigree registry of Himalayan Mountain Dogs. We intend these records to be used to establish the Himalayan Mountain Dog as a recognized breed throughout the world and with the major registration services such as Fédération Cynologique Internationale members, American Kennel Club, The Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, and Canadian Kennel Club.

• Offer connections with other breeders through our breeder directory, Face Book page, and Face Book group.


• Encourage and provide education for breeding for genetic diversity while preserving appearance, balanced temperaments, functional structure, and good health.

• Offer the opportunity, guidance, and materials for breeders and patrons of the HMD to form local and regional clubs to promote the HMD and have shows to exhibit their registered HMDs.

• As possible, provide on-the-ground support for HMDs living in native lands that may need health care, shelter, and food.





Our advisory board currently consists of three HMD experts. They are from Nepal, Pakistan, and the United States.
